Wow! What a great week it’s been. And to finish things off/start things up again, it’s my birthday today!
I’m looking forward to all the fun things Mrs Romance has planned for this day 12th May – the best day of the year. In my opinion! 😉
Hope you had a great week too – tell us what’s been going on with you when you get a minute. We love hearing what you’ve been up to. But for now – here’s the week we’ve had at Romance Media. Enjoy!
It’s katsu time for me this lunchtime. This place – Izakaya Masuya – on O’Connell Street in the city does these don bowls for $9.20, and they’re delish. I’ve also had their bigger bento boxes – also an absolute winner.
We take a closer look at the amazing city of Orvieto in Italy on site today. It’s an incredible place that the Etruscans built over a thousand years ago. Every building had a tunnel into the mountain the city stands on, and the tour that goes beneath the town into the tunnels is so interesting.
Above ground the modern day Orvieto has all the best bits of Italy concentrated into this little place. The locals are friendly and full of stories, the food’s amazing and the architecture here rivals the more touristy spots in its beauty and majesty.
Mrs Romance blesses my belly with one of her magical chocolate mousses today. You too should feel incredibly lucky as she’s sharing her recipe on Mr & Mrs today. It’s so delicious, this stuff. The recipe makes a whole load of mousse – but there’s not much left now I’m afraid [grins a big choc grin]!
Here’s the recipe for Mrs Romance’s mousse – enjoy!
Ordinarily I don’t eat much for lunch (for years, I survived on a single Vegemite sandwich) apart from last week when I ate a 1.8kg steak… but that was a food dare. Anyway, Mrs Romance and I decide it’s time to take the tip from Bob from TheJugernauts.com and head to Gumshara Ramen in Eating World in Chinatown.
Gumshara’s ramen bowls might not be as big as other places’ servings but the soup you get here is so thick and unctuous it fills you up just as much if not more. It’s pretty good but not for the faint-hearted. The soup’s so thick it’s very close to being gloopy. But once you’ve got used to it, you won’t be able to stop eating it.
My top tip: when you go there, get the chilli bomb extra. It’s a ball of beefy chilli and it dissolves in your soup like a bath bomb. Genius!
Mrs Romance is catching up with the awesomeness that is Steph from LipstickAndCake.com tonight. I’m sad I’m missing out on this little get-together… but on the other hand I dread to think what conversations are going on here!
Mrs Romance and Steph have dinner at Mejico on Pitt Street. From personal experience and from reports from Mrs R, the tacos here are really quite good. As are the margaritas!
Our review of our favourite Chicago restaurant is up on site today. The Boarding House on Wells Street, Chicago is a great restaurant. Service is excellent, food is inventive and delicious, and the prices aren’t bad for what you get either.
It’s the perfect venue for a romantic dinner or – if you’re only in Chi Town for a couple of nights, one of the best places to go to experience what Chicago has to offer in fine dining. It’s also owned by celebrity TV food pundit and master sommelier Alpana Singh.
It’s been a rainy morning here in Sydney. Then the sun comes out! It’s a recipe with a lovely result.
Friday can mean only one thing: Friday Drinks! This week we’ve made another cocktail for one of our friends. This is called the Sonic Tonic for the lovely Sonia from SoniaStyling.com. This is a great winter warmer that’ll keep you toasty as the chills of the colder months creep in.
Here’s the recipe for the Sonic Tonic.
Tonight we decide to try a new bar out tonight: the Wild Rover in Surry Hills. This is one cool little bar, with great drinks, amazingly attentive bar staff who really know their drinks and the biggest front door you’ve ever seen!
Mrs Romance’s drink – in the foreground – is the Wild Rover’s interpretation of a spritz Aperol and very tasty. My Lions Sour is excellent. I love my sours and this one’s well up there in the list!
Tonight we’re going to an old fashioned picture house in Surry Hills. The Golden Age Bar and Cinema – part of the old Paramount Studios renovation project. The bar is popular both with people who are here to watch a film and with anyone else who fancies a good cocktail, a craft beer or reasonable bottle of wine.
The best part is you can take your drinks into the cinema with you. We had a couple of bevvies and a nibble on some tasty prosciutto before the film.
And the film itself? Labyrinth! Got to love Bowie in this classic. The acting’s awful, the script’s dodgy at best and the muppet-like creatures Frank Oz makes as the main characters are ridiculous.
Do we like this film? No. We LOVE it! And it fits this little cinema perfectly.
The screen here only holds 40 people, and every one of us is deeply invested in this cult classic. We’re having an awesome time out tonight – no less because of the drinks we’re allowed to take to our seats in the cinema.
Today is Mothering Sunday in Australia. Even though my mum’s back in England, I thought it’d be only right to wish her a happy Mother’s Day. Here’s a pic of my mum and dad at my christening quite some time ago now!
Hope you’ve all had a good Sunday too – whether it’s to celebrate your mum or just because it’s Sunday!

What were you up to last week? Did you do anything cool? Tell us in the comments!
If you didn’t do anything cool – or you just want to keep it a secret – why not drop me a line to wish me a happy birthday? You know I’d really like that! 🙂
Natalie
Yay for Labyrinth! It’s been my favourite movie since I was like 6!
Mr Romance
It’s awesome, isn’t it, Natalie?! So bad it’s good. And you’ve just got to love Bowie and his voice! We went home and watched the Flight of the Conchords episode where Bowie comes to Bret in a dream. And we played Bowie songs all the next day too! So overloaded I think one of my eyes has changed colour!
