It’s hot from its latitude, it’s dry from the desert and its coastal breezes cool everything down when needs be. Because of this, San Diego is a rooftop bar mecca.
San Diego is one of those… outdoorsy sort of places. But I don’t mean a hike up a mountain or interminable days spent under canvas (Mrs Romance is so against camping it’s like she’s allergic).
I, on the other hand, quite like camping, so rooftop bars seem like the best compromise for Mrs R and me to spend time outside. Especially as it’s the drinking part of camping that I enjoy the most!
Our favourite rooftop spot in California’s southern city goes to Altitude Sky Lounge at the top of the Marriott. There are lots of reasons for this, but foremost is probably how it maintains that slick rooftop feel without losing its San Diego friendliness.
It’d be easy to stay here and ignore any other venue in the city. With views over the harbour and Petco Park, SD’s baseball field, it’s an awesome watering hole. When there’s a Padres game on, the side of the balcony overlooking the ballpark gets a bit busy, but if you’re that desperate to watch the game, tickets aren’t that much, you know!
The best of both baseball and cocktail worlds right here!
Coolest of all, Altitude even has a fire pit. So if it ever does get cold in SD, you can snuggle up next to the giant pebble-filled basin of fire in the middle of the terrace.
Happy hours are from 5 till 7 during the week and all day Sundays, and that brings prices down to a very affordable $5 beers – $6 cocktails (not to mention 50% off flatbreads if you’re peckish).
It’s always happy hour when the margaritas are this good!
Like many bars in San Diego this place is also cigar friendly.
They have a small range of non-Cubans to choose from behind the bar or you’re welcome to bring your own. Like I said, it’s a cigar friendly venue – with an emphasis on friendly!
