Food, drink and the Easter long weekend!

It’s probably true to say it’s not healthy to spend all week thinking about when it’ll end.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 1 Sky and title

But this time, I don’t think we’re alone – after all, it’s Easter long weekend!

Mrs Romance kicks off this week’s Instagram Diary with a beautiful shot of the Sydney skies between rain storms. It’s been a wet few days here recently, so it’s nice to see a positive outcome from being so soggy.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 1a how to cook the perfect steak

Today Mrs Romance and I have combined forces to come up with the ultimate education in barbecuing the perfect steak. Mrs R had a masterclass on steak cooking from celebrity chef Danny Russo and I went to see the Yoder Smoker, a wood smoking barbecue brand.

The Yoder Smoker I saw made me want a back garden so much… or at least a bigger balcony!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2 curry series Chana Masala

Continuing the cooking theme, the next offering in our curry series is here today: my chana masala chickpea curry recipe.

This is one our favourites… and probably one of the easiest curries to cook as well.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 3 aperitivo hour

If there’s one thing we love more than having a spritz Aperol in Italy, it’s having a spritz Aperol in Italy and having a load of free food! Believe it or not, this is a real thing!

In Italy – especially in Milan – Aperitivo Hour is a bit of a local secret where bars and eateries provide free food for the price of a drink between about 6pm-9pm.

We’ve looked into it a bit more and here’s the result: Aperitivo Hour – a sneaky way to eat for free in Italy.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 4 blueberry gf pancakes

Mrs Romance gets her brunch on today with a pile of delicious-looking gluten-free pancakes. She’s even done herself some blueberries, look!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 5 bacon, cheese, egg & avo butty

In direct riposte to Mrs R’s blueberry pancake tower, I get grillin’! Last week, Mrs R produced a fantastic cheese, tomato and avocado roll for my lunch. I take this as my inspiration and taunt Mrs R with the inclusion of bacon and a perfectly cooked egg.

I think my brunch is better than hers and Mrs R thinks hers is better than mine. In that way we are both happy and a compromise is met… for now! I think this could be the start of a He Said, She Said idea though.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 6 The Woog Cocktail

I love that Friday feeling when the Friday in question is one you can start with a lie-in! They don’t call it Good Friday for no reason.

Anyway, we’ve decided to start a little cocktail feature for Friday Drinks where we name one after one of our blogger friends. Our inaugural effort is this: the Woog Cocktail named after our dear friend Kayte from!

Inspired by a San Pelligrino recipe of all things, this little number is refreshingly sharp and quite unique, and can be relied upon to be a good party starter. Remind you of anyone?!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 7 perfect Easter day

We’re out in the burbs this long weekend visiting Mrs Romance’s mum. It’s got to be one of the best long weekends weather-wise we’ve seen for ages – just look at the sky from Mrs R Senior’s back garden!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 8 Easter egg salad

And the best part of Easter – in our books anyway – the classic egg salad. It’s pretty hard handing over the choc to our nephews, who this part of Easter’s really for if we’re honest with ourselves. But it’s important to save a little bit for yourself too. So don’t worry – the kids don’t get all of this lot! 😉

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 9 Easter w-e picnic

We head across to Manly Dam to catch up with friends of the family today. It’s an amazing spot and Mrs R’s family have been coming here for years and years. It’s a great place for families to come and picnic, there are free barbecues and lots of space for kids to play. And it’s quite a photogenic spot too!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 10 Sofi spritz

Back at home, we’re spruiking a little Aussie start-up today. Sofi spritz is an all-Australian owned and made drink that’s as light and refreshing as an Aperol spritz we love to drink – but it’s also made with only natural ingredients. It’s a Riesling-based spritz drink perfect for taking on picnics or for something lighter if you’re heading to a party. Definitely worth a look!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 11 grammar post on ProBlogger

And what a way to end a great long weekend! My guest post for has been published!

It’s a five-point grammar guide to help people with their writing. There’s also a free printable grammar cheat sheet that goes with the post. I found the whole process of writing this post hugely cathartic and I hope it helps with this weird language of ours!

Thank you, ProBlogger for putting my writing up on your site! 🙂

And now this week (it is Tuesday now, isn’t it?) – with the Anzac Day public holiday this Friday, there’s the opportunity to go for what one of my friends calls the ‘Triple Speducchi’, where you take three days of annual leave to receive a whopping 10 days off work… you could even push it with sick days if you were game!

I’ve no idea why he calls it the Triple Speducchi. I prefer calling it the Triple Lindy from Back to School and Rodney Dangerfield fame – but then my friend is quite odd!

What did you get up to this Easter break? Are you chucking a sickie this week or are you soldiering though? Tell us in the comments!

      Mrs Romance

Thanks Kat! It was gorgeous, especially after all the rain in the week before. Hope you’re enjoying the school holidays x

  • […] Here’s what else I got up to last with with Mr Romance. […]

  • Ooh I like the sound of the Sofi Spritz!

And JIM: you finally got to educate the world on every day vs everyday! Surely you can retire happy now…?!

      Mr Romance

Yeah, the Sofi Spritz is pretty good, Sonia. It’s the perfect option for a portable spritz Aperol!

As for the everyday vs every day issue, honestly Sonia it’s a weight off my mind. You know I think I’ve even seen Office Works (“Lowest prices everyday” grr) have issued new uniforms that say “Lowest prices every day”! How good’s that?! Next mission: Woolworths! 😉
