Where to drink in Sydney – the Clock Hotel in Surry Hills

If you haven’t been to the Clock Hotel before, you are either under-age or you’re not interested in pubs. This one’s a belter and shouldn’t be missed.

Obviously a classic Aussie pub at its heart, the Clock has undergone many incarnations. From the outside, it’s clear that it’s always been a pub, with its classic Australian wrap-around balcony and corner-stone attitude. From saloon to gastro to its current slick-but-accessible local feel, the Clock Hotel is a Surry Hills favourite.

The recent renovations to its sports bar has seen the Clock become even more of a central point for Surry Hills drinkers. There’s even more space to take a seat and live life easy in the drop-level garden terrace bar, handy for smokers. The pool tables live on in the pool room, adjacent to the back bar that now houses more of a seating-and-eating feel.

The first floor is still the most popular place to go, however. The balcony, wrapping around two of the four sides has that classic Aussie pub atmosphere and it’s a great place to watch Surry Hills go by.

Drinks and food are both good, though it’s a smart choice if you’re getting straight forward drinks (not cocktails) to head downstairs for quicker service.

There’s a range of happy hours and specials every day. Here are some of the options we found in the Clock recently:

Try your luck at Double Thursday! Roll a double with the dice and we’ll shout you your round. Roll a double 6 and you will win $25 Clock Dollars, plus your round of drinks for free! Between 7-9pm in the Street Bar.

Start your evening with $4 local tap beer, cider and house wines in Street, Lounge and the Courtyard bars. All cocktails from the fantastic Balcony Bar are $9.50 from 6pm-7pm. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Food goes from Monday – Friday 12pm – 3pm, then 5pm – 10pm, and weekends 12pm – 10pm.
Prices range from Cuban torpedo sliders ($6 each) and ‘Nibblers’ ($8 – $16) to pizzas, ‘Bun-Stuffers’ and mains ($15 – $22) – and it’s all pretty bloody good grub!

So if you’re looking for a good drink, good food and good atmosphere, the Clock’s a really good option – and it’s right opposite Messina Gelato if you fancy a late-night ice-cream… but more on that later. For now…
