Day 11 of our 30 Cocktails in 30 Days Challenge: the Dark & Stormy
Mrs Romance introduced me to this hearty cocktail very recently. You get a very manly feel when you’re drinking it – not that this should nor does put women off having one.
Don’t worry, the Dark & Stormy doesn’t induce beard growth or a larger adams apple, but it does have that grr appeal. Perhaps it’s the dark rum – a pirate favourite – that gives this drink its weight. Or maybe it’s the spice of the ginger beer top.
Either way it’s a cracker of a cocktail and I recommend it with a firm yo ho-ho!
How to make a Dark & Stormy
Here’s what you need:
For each drink
- Double measure of dark rum
- 1 lime cut into quarters
- ½ measure of sugar syrup
- Ice
- Ginger beer to top up
- Cocktail shaker, jigger measure, muddler
- ½ pint beer mug
- Lemon twist to garnish
Here’s what you do:
- Put the lime, rum and sugar syrup into the shaker
- Muddle all together until the limes are flat and squished
- Add ice and stir or shake
- Strain into the mug
- Top up with ginger beer
- Garnish with the lemon twist
The original recipe comes from Bermuda and uses a Bermudan rum called Goslings. We used Havana Club Anejo Especial, which did the job, but a spiced rum like Goslings would give the drink that extra dimension.
