Posh sushi, rustic curry and a national awards night

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 1 title

And so another week on Instagram flies by. We’ve been having fun enjoying the food and sights of our lovely city, and in the meantime enjoying a look back on our travels over the last little while.

The same as last week, I’ve separated our travel recap shots so they’re at the end of this week’s Diary.

Hope you enjoy the latest edition of our Instagram Diary. Here’s what’s been going on!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2 lunch at Sushi E

Today, we’re in the city to take our mate Paul out for lunch somewhere nice. It’s his birthday soon and also he’s had a bit of a stressful morning meeting with his big boss to ask for a lot of money for a new project at work.

Thankfully this lunch is a celebration all round – he got the money and he doesn’t seem too phased by his imminent birthday either!

We’re at Sushi E on George Street enjoying some delicious sushi and other Japanese fair. This place has to be in the top 5 for Japanese food in Sydney, so if you’re looking for a really good example that’s not Tetsuya prices, this place is the one to come to.

As and when you do come here, make sure you order the miso cod. It’s a game-changer!

By the way, I don’t know about you, but we seem to have gathered a lot of Pauls in our friends group lately. We’ve got about 7 of them and it’s very difficult to keep track of which one we’re talking about!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2a sunset over Sydney

The light over the city this afternoon is just divine. I’m out and about, but Mrs Romance is at Romance HQ snapping away. And thank goodness. Glad I didn’t miss this one!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2b homemade curry

This is part of Mrs Romance’s #FMSPhotoADay efforts. The idea -if you haven’t heard – is you take a photo based on the daily prompts and upload it to Instagram. It’s just a bit of fun. Our friend, Chantelle from FatMumSlim.com.au has been running this community for years now. Check it out.

Anyway, Mrs Romance has shot a (very small section) of the curry I’ve made for dinner. It’s my own interpretation of a brinjal curry – here’s the recipe – and it always seems to work. I’ve also made my favourite 5-hour slow-cooked beef vindaloo, but that’s clearly not photogenic enough!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2c reflection of Opera House

I love this shot Mrs Romance has taken of the Opera House while she’s out and about in Sydney today. Nice one, Mrs R!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 3 cocktails at Wilhelmina's

We’re exploring one of the cool little bars popping up in Balmain tonight. The cocktails at Wilhelmina’s are superb. Well worth coming here just to try their spiced negroni – though there are plenty more I want to try on the menu!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 3b Mrs R's cocktails at Wilhelmina's

Mrs Romance is also very pleased with her gin cocktail here at Wilhelmina’s. Love the mural too btw!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 4 views from Lavender Bay

It’s a crystal clear day on the harbour today. We’ve just had breakfast with friends (another Paul actually) in north Sydney and have walked back to Lavender Bay to make the most of this beautiful morning weather.

It’s easy to forget that there are so many parts of the foreshore that we don’t know about – there’s so much of it after all. We’ve even discovered a new Indian restaurant nearby to check out. Quite excited about that bit, actually!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 5 AHFA at Luna Park

Mrs Romance and I are walking the red carpet tonight! It’s the Australian Hair Fashion Awards night – the annual gala where the best in the hair industry come to receive their accolades. Mrs Romance has her Hair Romance hat on tonight and has brought me along in a plus-one capacity.

It’s always a great night with a fun show, great food and flowing wine. And as it’s at Luna Park this year, there’s an added element of fun to be had!

Our travel recap

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 10 pool in Provence

Can you believe this is in Provence? We were staying in an AirBnB place in the middle of the French countryside… with an infinity pool!

If you want to see what else we found, ate and did in Provence, here’s what we’ve written… so far!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 11 door in Como

Mrs Romance’s love of photographing doors always hits overdrive when we go to Europe. This little number we found in the back streets of Bellagio when we visited Lake Como for the day. Italy has some amazing doors for some reason, but this is definitely one of her favourites!

If you want to find out more about our time in Lake Como, here’s what we know!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 12 Miramare Castle Trieste

Mrs Romance’s father was born in Trieste. It’s a harbour town – a bit like Sydney I suppose – in the far north-east of Italy. It’s also home to one of the most picturesque castles ever. This is Castelo Miramare. Isn’t it beautiful?!

For some reason, we haven’t written much about Trieste – other than this excellent bar we love!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 13 private beach Capri

One of the most romantic days we’ve ever had travelling was the day we went to Capri in southern Italy. We discovered this hidden gem of a restaurant and then swam at a private beach in the most divine water.

Here’s the full account of this amazing day – and all the reasons you need to visit Capri!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 14 Trevi Fountain Rome

Trevi Fountain in Rome is a masterpiece. There’s no doubt about that. But the crowds that gather in front of it by late morning mean it’s almost impossible to get a good shot of the fountain without some berk in the way!

We love travelling in Italy, and we think we do it pretty well. That’s why we’ve written our guide to travelling well here. It’s full of tips like not trying to get a great photo of the Trevi Fountain at midday – and also that there’s a great gelato shop two streets back that isn’t as crowded as the one just behind it!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 15 from the Highline NYC

New York! It’s such an incredible city. This mural is a classic. We took this shot from the Highline park, an old disused rail track that two locals decided to repurpose into gardens and a walk. It runs along the western side of Manhattan through the now trendy Meatpacking District.

It’s well worth checking out when you’re there – as is this amazing painting.

If you want more tips on New York, here’s our ultimate first-timer’s guide to NYC, which is also our most popular article of all time!

So! How’s your week been? Have you been/done/eaten/drunk anything amazing over the past 7 days? Oh, and how many Pauls do you know? Tell us in the comments!
