Instagram Diary – California Edition: new ebooks, new sandwiches and pastures new

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 1 Cali Palm trees

We haven’t got long left here in San Diego. It’s been awesome to be able to spend so much time – not only with our friends who have put us up – but also to be able to get to know this place so much better.

San Diego really is a cool town – much lower key than a lot of other cities on the west coast. Mind you, when we get back from where we’re going, we’ll be exploring more of California right up until the Christmas break.

Where are we off to? Well, if you haven’t found out yet, you’ll have to wait until the end of this post for find out!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 2 Ben & Jerry's ice cream wonder

We do love finding cultural differences in the supermarkets of other countries. For example, I discovered a soft drink here in San Diego called Squirt. Say whaaat?! Squirt? You can’t call a drink that. You just can’t. There’ll be a photo of this soft beverage atrocity at a later date.

For now, here’s another supermarket marvel: the enormous Ben & Jerry’s selection – and at ridiculous prices too. On Instagram, @BenAndJerrysOz very nicely explained why the prices were higher while selections were still wanting in Australia. Here’s what they had to say:

@mrandmrsromance At Ben & Jerry’s we have set ourselves a mission to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way. This means ensuring each country that sells the sweet stuff follows the socially-aligned sourcing policies we’ve had since the ’80s. We agree that it is frustrating that products are so much cheaper in the US than they are down udder (online shopping anyone?). We do everything we can to make sure that every pint we make is made with the best quality and sustainably sourced chunks and swirls possible, and unfortunately these ingredients aren’t always the cheapest. You can see there is more to Ben & Jerry’s than meets the eye but be assured that we make every effort to keep the price we charge distributors to that of an ‘affordable luxury’ so everyone can share in the peace, love & ice cream.”

Thanks for replying, Ben & Jerry’s. Bit long for an IG comment, but we love your passion!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 3 Mondrian post

Today we’re flashing back (that’s a thing, isn’t it?) to our stay in LA recently. The Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood was amazing, so we thought it’d be only right to review it. This is just one of the pictures we took of the pool area.

Check out our review for more info and even more pics!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 4 pineapple experiment

Mrs Romance has been pondering whether pineapples float or not for so long… it’s become a bit of an obsession. Here in San Diego, we finally get to test it. Our friends’ pool is about to become the scene of a scientific experiment.

What do you think will happen?

Well, it floats.

So there.

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 6 Chicago pizza in SD

Tonight, a group of us decide it’s time to put San Diego’s Chicago deep dish pizza to the test.

This thing is bloody huge!

Looks like Lefty’s Chicago Pizzeria is pretty convincing!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 7 Mr A's at sunset

It’s our friend Mona’s birthday today! The only thing to do is to go to the rooftop bar with the very best view in town.

This is the Bertrand at Mr A’s. Well worth a look – especially as you can see the planes coming in to land between the buildings of the city – amazing!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 7a HR1 Mrs R's book available now

Finally! Mrs Romance has published her latest book! This one is a masterpiece working in collaboration with Sara-May of Makeup Utopia – so technically we’re looking at two books!

They’re focused on helping brides-to-be to create the best hair and makeup looks by themselves on their wedding day – especially if it’s a destination wedding. But Mrs R and Sara-May have been very careful to make it clear how useful the skills you learn in their books are and how you’ll be able to use them for the rest of your life, not just your big day.

Check out Mrs Romance’s DIY Bridal Beauty: Hairstyling Companion here. There’s a deal on to buy both the hair and makeup books as a package too!

Congratulations Sara-May and Mrs Romance. You’ve worked hard to get this collection out and I think it’s a brilliant idea!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 8 oyster poboy at Ironside

We’re in Little Italy for lunch today. We head out with our lovely new friend Susan for a feed. Susan’s been here a while and takes us to a place called Ironside Fish & Oyster Bar.

It’s a very cool place and well worth a look-in if you’re in Little Italy in San Diego.

This is my fried oyster poboy, and it’s awesome!! I’ve never had one before, so I’m glad it’s turned out well!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 9 negroni at Ironside

Ironside also serves up some amazing cocktails. Mrs Romance goes for one of their specials, but I’ve been hanging for a good negroni.

Hunger sated!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 10 Torrey Pines beach

Our friend Mona has taken us to the Torrey Pines National Park today. These trees are some of a handful of native trees in Southern California (that’s right, those big tall palm trees are imported!). The park is amazing and has some excellent walks around it. It’s also mostly downhill that end on this beach.

It’s just beautiful!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 11 LUNCH!!

After our walk, we’re all starving, so we go to Barefoot Bar for food. This has to be one of the coolest places we’ve found in San Diego. The food’s all great (this is my BELT – Bacon Egg, Lettuce Tomato), the views are sensational (it’s on the water) and the food’s great. Did I mention how much I like the food?

Seriously, I don’t know why I haven’t thought of putting an egg in a BLT before. Genius!

I must give credit to Annette of for the name ‘BELT’. Very funny!

Mr & Mrs Romance - Insta Diary - 12 plane trip

And that’s it. We’re leaving!

Our first stop is Phoenix – for about 45 minutes. And then another flight further south-east to… Mexico!

That’s right, we’re heading to the Yucatan Peninsular, to Cancun. Why this part of Mexico, you might ask. Well, there are couple of reasons that we’ll tell you about in about a fortnight.

But the most present reason is how close Cancun is to…

That’s right, we’re flying to Havana in the morning! Excited? Us? You bet we are!

Just to let you know, if you’re wondering what’s happened to us over the next couple of weeks, we are (probably) still alive, it’s just that Cuba doesn’t have the best internet connection in the world, so we might be a bit quiet.

But like Arnie, we’ll be back!

      Mr Romance

Hey Natalie. I think we’re very much on the same wavelength! All food good! This poboy was particularly tasty though!
