Where to stay in Tulum, Mexico – Casa de las Olas

Tulum and the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsular is one of Mexico’s great secrets. Lush jungles, ancient ruins, spectacular Caribbean beaches, beautiful food, friendly people. But where do you stay? For us it’s got to be Casa de las Olas – the House of the Waves.

Snuggled in amongst the palm trees of the Yucatan jungle, but close enough to the shore to hear the waves of the Caribbean, Casa de las Olas had our hearts from the start.

It might have been something to do with the resident dachshund, Herschel, and Mrs Romance’s obsession with sausage dogs… but I don’t think that’s giving this place enough credit.

Casa de las Olas is a small eco-minded villa with just 5 rooms to stay in. This makes your stay here so personal you can’t help but feel like you’re at home as soon as you walk in.

Each room is more like a little apartment, with a well-equipped kitchenette and diner, and a good-sized balcony. Our room – the Ocean Front Balcony Suite – was a dream come true.

To stay here feels more like a really, really good bed-and-breakfast. This feeling’s helped along by the amazing brekky Olas’s resident kitchen wizard Lulu knocks up every morning.

Plates of fruit, jugs of fresh juice, pots of steaming coffee, eggs cooked with Lulu’s delicious sauce… it’s so good. And all served on the long table out in the gardens. We also had lunch here one day, which we cannot recommend enough.

The rest of the staff here are all awesome too, and make sure you’re not only comfortable but as happy as possible. Listen to any recommendations they might have – thank you, Shedar for your tip to go to Chamico’s!

But the biggest and best draw card of this beautiful little eco-hotel is the feeling you get of being complete seclusion.

Olas is right next to a huge area of national park – the UNESCO world heritage Sian Ka’an Reserve, which is jealously protected by the state. This means not many people go past the hotel – either on the road side or the beach side.

With this quiet end of the beach quite literally on your doorstep, staying here feels very private. And the sounds of the ocean as you drift off to sleep at night are hypnotic.

Olas doesn’t rely on noisy, smelly generators for its power, which a lot of the other places in Tulum do. This means no constant rumble of a motor all day and night, and no pollution from burning fuel either.

Instead the property runs in 100% solar.

Everything about Casa de las Olas goes back to having a peaceful, authentic experience of this part of Mexico.

And I’ve got to say, I think they’ve nailed it.
