Our heart is where our home is: behind the scenes of Mr & Mrs Romance

Romance Media – Mr and Mrs Romance, Hair Romance and Nail Romance – is all run from our home here in Sydney. We thought you might like to see a bit behind the scenes; where we create what you love to read.

Welcome to Romance HQ!

Mr and Mrs Romance - Home Tour - Bar room

We love our little flat in the heart of Sydney. We’ve been here for about six years now, and we’re still not bored of it. One of the key ingredients in our happiness here is this view we often work from.Mr and Mrs Romance - Home Tour - Sunroom views

Although we use this room as an office/bar, it’s really a kind of enclosed balcony. It gets a bit chilly in the winter and heats up in the summer, but we battle through! 🙂

By the way, when I first put the chairs like this to work here, Mrs Romance didn’t like it. She thought it felt like sitting on a bus. I have no idea what kind of buses she uses, but I think I see where she’s coming from.

Years before we met, Mrs Romance bought this old bar from Vinnie’s and somehow got it in the boot of her Honda Civic. You might recognise the heart design in the background. It’s our signature photo backdrop – though we’ve also written about how to make one yourself.

Our bar is also in our office (very Mad Men, don’t you think?) and we keep it extremely well-stockedfor research purposes, of course! We also keep our favourite glassware in here.

These gold liqueur glasses are from when Mrs R used to manage an expensive homewares store in the UK. They’re LSA… which I think stands for ‘Not Dishwasher Safe’ in their special language, so we don’t use them that often. Pretty though, aren’t they?

We love having pictures all over the house. On this sideboard is a little collection of them. The screen print is from Kyoto and is of a sacred garden we visited there. The one of us is from before we got married. Our wedding photographer, Dean from Inlighten Photography, insisted on doing an engagement shoot with us. It was surprisingly good fun.

The one at the back is one of Mrs Romance’s first photographs to be publicly displayed. It’s made up of a collage of about 50 photos of her, each of which she developed by hand in a dark room. Each one’s different though the picture itself is the same. Very Warhol!

Oh and the wooden brick calendar is my ongoing OCD project. I change that thing every night before I go to bed. It’s in Italian (even the numbers – just kidding), so every month I get to have an educated guess at what I should change it to. The days I think I’ve finally nailed.

Finally, back in the office, this is our new favourite cushion. It’s from I Love Linen and we think it fits perfectly with our Mr & Mrs Romance brand.

You’re on, Sonia! Next time you’re up in Sydney, we’ll get a cocktail thing happening! We love living here – but I think it’s the view that’s stopped us outgrowing the space. And the location too. It’s just too handy to move away from!

What a gorgeous space! I think everyone should have a bar in their home – now to find somewhere to fit one in my apartment!

Thanks Liz! We do love it here. And yes, everyone should have a bar in their place. It’s funny, when my folks saw ours, they all got one too! My brother’s gone a bit mad on it and has a balustraded glasses shelf and everything… though my cousin has probably taken it too far and has recreated a whole pub in his back garden. It’s got beer taps, optics for the spirits, dart board, the works.
I think my family could probably start our own AA club actually!

You know I always wondered about that pom pom heart wall decoration and then I saw it in real life and felt so special and now you’ve gone and shown everyone else what it looks like in context. You ruined the magic Jim. YOU RUINED IT!!!!!

I’m so sorry, Smags. You know, you’re still very special to us though. There aren’t many who have taken our unique Floaty Floaty Bed ride though. Perhaps only six or seven in fact. And that includes us and my family!
