Hi Missy. It sounds like we travel in Italy very similarly to you! A lot of train and a little by car. And you're right - staying out of the way of the faster locals. My favourite tip for driving on the autrostrada is when you overtake and a car comes up behind you to put your indicator on again. It tells the driver behind you that you know they're there and that you'll pull over when you get past the person you're overtaking. Cools the situation down!

My partner and I did 5-6 weeks in Italy last year and mostly used the trains, but decided to rent a car for some of the more rural part of our trip.

We hired it from the airport in Florence, drove down through Perugia and Amalfi Coast before returning it just outside Naples before training back to Rome.

We found it pretty easy once we understood how the 'system' works - e.g. keep far right on the autostrada unless overtaking so we didn't get in the way of faster drivers and we didn't bother hiring a car for the big cities (too stressful). But it's a great way to see the country-side and up and go when you want. :)
