Hi Dan. Definitely worth going to the Rainforest Lodge and spending as long as possible there. We were there for 2 nights and that was enough. Our advice would be to make sure you’re not in the cheapest accommodation though unless you really want that jungle safari feel. The basic rooms are quite… basic.
Also, see if you can budget for a private guide. It’s a bit more money, but you get your own expert who takes you round the forest and organises the tours you want to do. Really makes the experience special and also increases your chances of seeing things like elephants and orang utans because you’re more mobile and less disruptive. Ask for ‘Paul’ – he was our guide, who was brilliant.
Hope this advice helps. Danum Valley really is an incredible place – a world-class one-off destination.

Wow! Very impressed you climbed Kinabalu, Justine! That’s a big hike. Our guide said he’d done it but had struggled – and he lives in the jungle most of the time! Sabah’s a great outdoorsy destination, isn’t it? Glad you had a good time too.
