Bruce from BigFamilyLittleIncome.com tells us his answer to the question: what does romance mean to you? Bruce’s big heart, big personality and even bigger family tell a beautiful yet hilarious story of romance.
The Devereaux family has seen its ups and downs when it comes to the roll of the dice of life. When Bruce’s delightful wife Tracey fell gravely ill in 2015, things were tough for everyone, even for friends and fans of the family.
Through her strength of will (Bruce would call it stubbornness!) and the incredible love of her family, Tracey pulled through, and so began the next chapter in this beautiful relationship.
Deciding that a family of 9 didn’t have enough on its plate, they now live on a bus travelling the width and breadth of Australia. Big Family Little Income is Bruce’s hilarious, touching chronicle – a story told with the sass, humour and tenderness of a man truly in love with his life.
Here’s what Bruce has to say about romance:
What does romance mean to you: Bruce Devereaux – Big Family Little Income
1. What’s something romantic that someone has done for you?
Tracey does the most amazing thing for me all the time: she lets me sleep in. Seven kids into this life and we’ve moved the goalposts to the stuff, which really matters to us. It’s like dates.
We giggle when we get a chance to do grocery shopping together. The younger, childless me wouldn’t understand.
2. What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done for someone else?
I wrote our wedding song. The song Tracey walked down the aisle to and that we danced our first dance as a married couple. We sang it as a duet. It was deeply personal and very honest, saying we’re neither of us perfect, but we’re perfect for each other.
When Tracey was unconscious in ICU for a few weeks, I’d comb her hair and sing it to her. It’s our song. Will always be our song. The lyrics still work for us.
3. What everyday small things do you find romantic?
Touch. Holding hands in the street or having our legs against each other as we go to sleep or deliberately brushing past each other in the kitchen. Touch is deeply personal because it’s essentially invading someone’s personal space.
Being allowed into someone’s personal space is a privilege and romantic as fuck. More romantic than fucking. Any two people can bash their genitals together occasionally, but being granted a lifetime access to someone’s personal space says they enjoy just being near you.
4. What do you think is romantic that others might not?
Silliness. Especially inappropriate silliness. Being a dag in front of each other and the other person gets it and laughs even though you’re no Jim Carey or Steve Martin.
Tracey is the funniest woman I know, but she won’t say half the stuff that comes into her head in public because she worries people will judge her on it. She trusts me with her best lines. That’s romantic to me. Over twenty years of living in each other’s pockets and we still get a kick out of each other. What’s not to love?
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective on what romance means, Bruce. You’ve got a lovely family and you’re living the dream, mate. Long may that continue.
