Where to stay in Mudgee: Mudgee Homestead Guesthouse

Mudgee, New South Wales, is one of those special places that really lends itself to relaxation, amazing food and drink, and a friendly welcome. And if you’re looking for where to stay in Mudgee that embodies that, we’ve got just the place!

As we drove into town, we noticed there were quite a few places to stay in Mudgee. And there are.

But as we were pulling up the drive to the Mudgee Homestead Guesthouse, we realised we were staying in the cream of this particular crop.

The drive wound through the Homestead’s grounds past their little orchard and the rolling lawns. And as we drew up to the house we spotted the resident troop of kangaroos munching away on the front garden.

Sean, one of the owners, met us when we arrived and gave us a tour of this beautiful old custom-built Queenslander.

Each of the 7 private bedrooms has a separate bathroom and everything else, but it’s the little details that make the rooms. Plus they’ve really invested in the beds – ours was the most comfortable bed aside from our own I’ve ever slept in.

Typical of the style of the house, there’s a runaround veranda with views west over the hills and fields. And the sunsets from the comfy chairs are unbelievable. As we were taking in one of these sunsets, Sean brought us cake for afternoon tea.

The cakes, by the way, made by Karen, Sean’s wife and fellow owner of the guesthouse, were unbelievable. She’d even made them gluten-free knowing Mrs R can’t do gluten!

Karen also cooks the breakfasts every morning. She does a mean full English, which is praise indeed coming from me! Breakfast’s served in the elegant formal dining room.

The other main room of the guesthouse is the Fireside Lounge. This sumptuous room’s full of squashy Chesterfield sofas, books, board games and a beautiful wood fire that Karen prepares every day.

We made sure each night we came home early enough to sit in those chairs, drink some wine we’d bought and light that fire. We also pulled out the Scrabble board.

In the Fireside Lounge there’s also a decanter of port you can help yourself to, the same with sherry in the dining room.

You get a real feeling of decadence and luxury from this place.

It’s the perfect spot for a romantic weekend getaway. On the other hand, Mrs Romance and I enjoyed imagining getting a big group of us together and booking the whole place out. You see, not only do you have all of this, plus only a 5-minute drive to town, there’s also a billiard room under the house.

It has it’s own bar and fridge, and there’s a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue too. It would be awesome for a weekend away with family and friends.

Unfortunately, there’s a no-kids rule for the main guesthouse unless you book out the whole place exclusively for your group, which I think is fair enough. There is a separate cottage you can rent out though, which is kid friendly.

This really is a great place to base yourself in order to explore Mudgee and all its delicious glory!
