Whether it’s a hot summer’s day or a chilly winter’s evening, this Amaretto Sour cocktail recipe will make you want to join the party, and put your feet up and chill at the same time. It’s the all-inclusive game-changer. Sweet, sour, fruity, nutty… it’s got it all.

Choosing a cocktail can be so hard. You go into a bar and the menu seems to stretch out in front of you further and further the longer the person behind the bar stands there waiting to take your order.

More often than not, you’ll just resort to your staple drink of a beer or something simple like a gin and tonic or a vodka, lime and soda… that’s often what happens with Mrs Romance and me.

Either that or I’ll just choose the strongest sounding cocktail and end up with my other favourite, a Long Island Ice Tea.

But a sour cocktail could be your new option – it’s certainly mine. I love a whisky sour, and we’ve got a couple of friends who lust after an Amaretto sour. For this reason, we thought we’d share our recipe with you that you can easily make at home.

The Amaretto gives the drink a lovely smooth almond flavour and the sour citrus edge cuts through the sweetness of the liquor. It’s really a great drink – it’s taken a while but I can now see what our friends are so excited about.

Here’s what you need:

  • 2x Disaronno Amaretto liqueur
  • Juice of ½ a lime
  • Splash of lemon juice
  • Simple sugar syrup (just add ½ a shot of water and stir 1 – 2 teaspoons caster sugar into it until dissolved)
  • Egg white (optional)
  • Piece of orange and a maraschino cherry to garnish.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Pour the Amaretto, lime and lemon juice and simple syrup into a shaker with plenty of ice.
  2. Separate the egg yolk and white. Add about ½ to 1 shot of the white to the shaker.
  3. Shake hard for about 30 seconds to a minute.
  4. Strain the drink into a glass full of ice.
  5. Garnish with the orange slice and a cherry.

This drink’s perfect as an aperitif before dinner or a party, it’s good for the end-of-evening nightcap and it’s great for a middle-of-the-evening tipple

It’s one of the great all-rounder cocktails!

If you’re in a hurry or don’t have everything in the ingredients list, you can make this drink with just Amaretto and lime or lemon juice.

If you’re not a fan of almond flavour, this same drink works really well with Frangeilico, which is made with hazelnuts.

One of our Amaretto-addict friends swears by an extra dash of orange juice to the mix. I think – if you can get it – a splash of orange bitters would be even better than that!

Very important – don’t use too much egg white. Our first attempt at this drink saw me put almost a whole egg white into the drink. Our polite friend said the drink tasted really good, but it didn’t smell too good.

In other words, it stank of egg!

All the egg white does is adds a frothy top to the drink. It’s supposed to give the cocktail a silky texture as well, but it’s not necessary. Some bars always make their sours with egg white, others don’t. It’s entirely down to personal preference.

However you take it, this cocktail is a real winner. Sharp, fruity, sweet, nutty, it’s got so many dimensions. And if you wanted to make this a longer drink, you could even add a splash of sparkling water to the glass at the end!

What do you think of sour cocktails? Which would you prefer – Amaretto almond or Frangelico hazelnut? What’s your cocktail staple? Tell us in the comments!
