30 Cocktails in 30 Days – Day 26: the Manhattan

Mr and Mrs Romance - Day 26 - The Manhattan Cocktail Recipe

Day 26 of our 30 Cocktails in 30 Days: the Manhattan.

Mrs Romance loves New York more than anywhere else in the world, I reckon. Even more than Italy. Maybe even more than Sydney.

With that in mind, we couldn’t not put the Manhattan in our list. And also because it’s a classic. And it’s pretty tasty too!

The drink’s history dates back to the 1870s – in NYC of course – in the Manhattan Club, hence the name. Popular stories suggest the Manhattan was served at a banquet hosted by Lady Randolf Churchill – Winston Churchill’s mum.

The Manhattan is an acquired taste. There’s no juice or anything with this, so don’t expect an easy ride.

How to make a Manhattan

Here’s what you need:

For each drink

  • Double measure of bourbon whiskey
  • ½ measure of sweet vermouth
  • 4 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • Ice
  • Martini glass
  • Maraschino cherry to garnish
  • Orange rind twist
  • Cocktail shaker, jigger measure, long spoon

Here’s what you do:

  1. Pour the bourbon, vermouth and Angostura bitters over ice into the shaker.
  2. Stir vigorously with the spoon.
  3. Place the cherry in the bottom of the martini glass.
  4. Rub the rim of the glass with the orange rind to scent the glass.
  5. Strain the cocktail over the cherry into the glass.
  6. Sit back and think of the Big Apple.

The original Manhattan called for rye whiskey (which I personally prefer), but it’s now more often made with a good bourbon.
